Module 8: Web 2.0 Education

What does 'Web 2.0' mean?

Web 2.0 refers to "sites that use the Internet for sharing content, communications and collaboration with a focus on educational value for learners and other participants. These sites include such learning tools as Wikispaces, Blogger, Edublogs, YouTube, VoiceThread, Wordpress and a significant host of other applications"  (Alberta Education. (2012). Part B: Web 2.0 Evaluation criteria

Below are the five critera I feel are important when evaluating a Web 2.0 tool for your classroom.

1) Ease of Use
Can the student do a simple set up and start utilizing the tool right away or is there a complicated learning process? The grade range you are planning on using the Web 2.0 tool comes into consideration here, a Social 30-1 student can usually handle a longer set up process better than a third grader.

2) Who Has Account Control
If the teacher has primary control over the student settings, can they access it without the teacher's permission? If the student has control, have you discussed how to set privacy settings? Are they mature enough to understand how to handle a public profile/site? The grade range you are planning on using the Web 2.0 tool comes into consideration here as well, gradual release of teacher control should happen as the student grows olds.

3) Universality
This criteria was taken from the YouTube video "Web 2.0 Tool Evaluation Criteria" by user Ray Van Geel. He discussed that taking into consideration weather or not the Web 2.0 tool can be used in multiple subjects is important and I agree.

4) Appropriateness for Students
This was also taken from Geel's video. This entails wether or not the Web 2.0 application has things such as advertisements, access to inappropriate content or commercial interests.

5) Flexibility
Can students be creative with the Web 2.0 tool? Is there an option to customize a profile, upload some of their own content to organize their displays to suit their learning styles. This extends to the teacher as well, can the tool actually do what you want the tool to do? Can you add on customized learning tools and methods for certain students?
